Anomaly: Spoonfed

The results are in the from the National Students' Survey and the Department of Data Engineering at the University of Henley are not happy.

Many undergraduate students have complained the department's courses are too hard, want everything to be explained explicitly to them and that the department isn't providing enough feedback.

"Well if the students are expecting to be spoonfed, then spoonfed they shall be." proclaims the head of the department.

CUT TO

A silent sterile looking canteen where endless rows of undergraduate students gormlessly sit in silence in a  vegetative state. The head of department, now disguised in scrubs, rolls by with a medical trolly and orders a nearby student on the end of the row to open wide. The student obeys with no hesitation and opens up their mouth. The head of department forcefully jams in a spoonful of unappealing gruel into the mouth and forces shut the student's mouth with the spoon still sticking out.  The head of department rolls his trolly down the row and enters a door.

We next see the head of department and the rest of the academic staff working busily in a laboratory. The majority of stuff are handling large oil drums  in full radioactive uniform and we observe them refilling the a rows of empty bowls with the same unappealing gruel coming from a radioactive drum labelled, "Statistics for Spoonfeeding".

CUT TO

The head of the department overseeing the whole laboratory and sinisterly smiling at his clever scheme.

Anomaly: Phone Smart

In a world where the majority of the population are addicted to their smart phones, Fez takes it to a whole new level.

Fez constantly seems to be glued to his smart phone, even in the company dearest friends. He can't bear to be without it, even sleeping with it underneath his pillow, and becomes ever so tense when he becomes detached it for over a minute.

But recently, his phone has become too clever his own good. He knows exactly what Fez wants to do, even before Fez knows himself, and has started to mimic Fez's cyber social presence ridiculously well. And then all of a sudden Fez disappeared from the face of the world.

But none of his friends have notice as he still continues to have an active unsuspicious cyber social presence; all thanks to his smartphone.

Anomaly: The Clique

A new black-comedy horror show in the style of Murder Most Horrid and Tales of the Unexpected. Each week features a different story based around the thrills and horrors of being a (Statistics) PhD student.

The Clique

A male orientated and academic parody of the witty, dark classics Mean Girls and Heathers which uncovers how famous academics really generate a large number of publications each year.

Miller is attending a famous statistical conference in Bermuda and doesn't know any other delegates. Upon his arrival, he is approached by a trio of very serious academics, who he has cited in his who and is in admiration of their research.

As the conference progresses, Miller starts to become increasingly nervous of all the attention the academics are making so that he enjoys the conference. First it started with having lunch with them each day. Then it was the bar outing and his statistical knowledge under the influence of alcohol. Then it was the papers race where each member of the group has to write an entirely new paper within an evening and submit it to a highly regarded journal, and who gets the least scathing reviews. Miller succeeds in every one of these events to which the clique of academics sinisterly smile at.

And then suddenly Miller, disappears the next day to which the trio of academics have no recollection of where he is. We cut to Miller, locked in a dark cellar with other previous fellow young intelligent academics, churning out papers under the names of the sinister trio of academics, whilst the academics villianesque-ly laugh at from the top of the stairs.

Tossed salad and scrambled eggs.

Frasier has left the building.

Aliasing

Sitcom about the Statistics Department at the University of Haarville where the academic staff share names with several celebrities and famous people in popular culture. Examples include: George Michael, Colin Firth and Anne Hathaway.

Hilarity ensues as the academics are often mistaken and mis-booked as their famous counterparts and must perform the tasks they were booked for the client, often with disastrous results.

The Head of the Department also realises that this "mis-booking" system also generates more money than the "research and teaching" system and thus decides to focus the department's attention on the more hilarious approach.

It's a mad mad statistical world you see, when combined with some popular culture...

Phamily and Friends

An unsuccessful back door pilot which features Pham, the Vietnamese friend of Nam and Freeman.

The pilot revolves around Pham temporarily moves into Nam's apartment and unknowingly to Nam, also brings with him his family baggage....quite literally.

Hilarity ensues as Pham must try and cover up his family's track whilst living in Nam's flat in a tiny spare room, and also stealthy steal copious amounts of food from Nam.

"Phamily and Friends" gets cancelled after its pilot due to poor ratings, and several complaints from the Vietnamese community regarding the cheap and always food hungry portrayal of them.

The things you learn from your supervisor....

Ever noticed that the "N" in 7-Eleven is lower case? Well, neither did I until my supervisor pointed it out to me. Ever curious, I decided to investigate the possible meaning behind this whole branding exercise...

There are several reasons that are floating about on the internet:

1) It's for Feng Shui or Numerology reasons; the lower case "N" as a magnet for good luck and fortune.

2) An all upper case "Eleven" appears harsher in branding, so the lower case "N" was introduced to give a softer, graceful look to the company.

But thank god for me talking up a PhD just to know about this...

The Big Bang Theory: The Asian Shark

Fearing that The Big Bang Theory is not an accurate portrayal of Caltech University, the creators of the show decide to introduce a new British Asian/Chinese character, in the form of Nam, a British Born Chinese Statistics student on exchange for a year. This ultimately causes the show to jump the shark, much to the fans disapproval.

"Hiliarity" (in the loosest sense of the word) ensues as the geek clique (both socially and statistically) encounter the following scenarios:
- Chinese food just being normal food to Nam.
- Nam suffering an identity crisis as he's more British than Chinese, and in America.
- Nam having a low tolerance in alcohol, resulting in many drunken escapades and Nam frequently blending in with red objects behind him.
- The geek clique, particularly Sheldon, not understanding many of Nam's Britishness.
- The geek clique not getting many of Nam's British geeky knowledge such as Amstrad computers being his computer of choice.
- Penny, Bernadette and Amy being completely ensnared by Nam's James Bond-esque qualities.

After much revolt from the fans, Nam will be killed off in the season finale, having ironically done some research on micromorts.

Nam face palms.

Going gangasta...

The Misadventures of Nam & R.O.B: The Wedding

Previously on the Misadventures of Nam and R.O.B. ...

the robotic clique was on the verge of an electrifying cliffhanger as they teetered by the side of pool, all on the eve of the robotic wedding of the year.

CUT TO: the front page of a newspaper (The Short Circuit) with the headline "Ping Ping My Ding-a-Ling" with the remainder of the front page featuring a zoomed in photo of a perfectly formed robotic derrière. Pippa should be scared...

The episode retraces back all that has happened on the wedding day with hilarity ensuing from the wedding ceremony being interrupted by a one of R.O.B's past conquests, Androgyonic .
Add to this the robotic ceremony parties on down to the "The Humans are Dead (Robot Boogie)" making Nam feel very awkward.

And finally, as the night draws to a close, R.O.B. sheds a tear and transforms into a young man. The camera pans out gradually, showing the UK, the Earth and then the Solar System. The misadventures of Nam and R.O.B drawn to a close, but R.O.B. embarks on his own set of misadventures with Eve.

Frequentist & Bayes

From the creators of Skewlock (a show about a serial killer who skews people to death, and is generally skewed to one side in all aspects of life) comes a new detective show and how statistics can help solve crimes.

Frequentist is an old fashioned detective, relying heavily on long run behaviour, and generally shunning any means of technology.

Bayes is an up and coming, young modern detective who is very with technology, going much more on gut feeling and updating his beliefs with every ounce of new evidence.

The two are unexpectedly paired up (much to their initial annoyance) and despite their polar opposite characteristics and approaches, manage to solve crimes together!

The Misadventures of Nam & R.O.B. : Stag Do

In this week's misadventure....

With the impending nuptials of R.O.B. and Eve occurring in a couple of weeks time, R.O.B. celebrates his last moments of robotic freedom via the traditional British Stag Do.

Hilarity ensues as lone human Nam must endure the company of R.O.B. and his other robotic friends such as R2-D2, K-9, C-3PO and KITT from Knight Rider. They'll be an actual robotic dance move from actual robots (a treat for the human eyes), and an awkward moment when C-3PO tries to flirt with Nam.

The episode ends with a rather tense cliffhanger when the party moves towards a swimming pool.

Will there circuits be fried and put the wedding event of the robotic year in jeopardy?

What's up post-doc?

The cold open: Sunset on a Hawaiian beach with the silhouette of a causally dressed man. He is looking into the sea, enjoying the view and the life he is living. We shall never get to see the face of this man throughout the series of this "sitcom", and this enigmatic man goes by a single letter; A.

The man's peaceful moment is disrupted by the ringing of his mobile phone. He hastily answers.

"Hi A, it's the department here. We're just wondering when you'll be back from your conference. You've been gone for three months or so and whilst we're impressed with the amount of research you've done, we feel that your PhD students might be suffering with the lack of a supervisor. Any estimate on when you'll be back?"

"I'm not entirely sure, but probably in the next couple of weeks or so. Don't worry, my PhD students are in the capable hands of my post-doc."

"Well, we'll trust you. Enjoy the rest of Havard and hope you're not working too hard. We'll see you soon."

A hangs up with confidence, takes one deep sigh, and returns back to his relaxing moment on the Hawaiian beach; the complete solitude he is in.

CUT TO:

A close up of a fairly young face in his late 20s on his distressed, tired face. As the camera slowly zooms out, it is revealed that he is being talked to from three different female students, each trying to have their own different conversations with the young man. Each student is talking over each other, trying to grab the young man's attention (in some cases physically and generally being quite aggressive) by explaining things on the blackboard and showing them results on their laptop.

Finally, as the camera pans out enough to reveal the young man is sitting distressed in a fairly small office with these three female PhD students, the young man falls flat faced onto his office desk, tired from the exhaustion of the students.

CUT TO:

Title screen: What's up post-doc?

A new sitcom revolving around Mark, a young post-doc who is put in charge of supervising his supervisor's PhD students. Trouble is that they're all unruly female PhD students, each with a mind of their own. Hilarity ensues as he tries to cope with supervising these students, whilst his supervisor enjoys his life on a Hawaiian beach but taking all the credit of course.

Bob IS Your Uncle: Dinner Party

The black comedy continues...

20 something Sarah is about to host her very first dinner party in her new London apartment. She's invited her usual close friends, but has regrettably also invited her parents and her Aunt Rose and Uncle Bob. She's always thought Aunt Rose and Uncle Bob were an odd pairing, with Uncle Bob seeming ever too camp for words...

Hilarity ensues as the dinner party turns into a disaster: Uncle Bob displays his ever so dirty mind by associating each conversation topic with a sexual undertone and Aunt Rose becomes indescribably drunk under copious amounts of alcohol. To top it all off, one of her close male friends suddenly remembers that he's previously had a brief intimate encounter in a dark alleyway with Uncle Bob.

At least her soufflĂ© didn't collapse...

Ah well, what can you do when Bob IS Your Uncle

Reversible JUMP!

An 80's family comedy film revolving around a body switching experience between a PhD student and his supervisor (see Freaky Friday and other body-switching films).

Nam and Jackton are a formidable supervisee-supervisor duo, taking the Statistics world by storm. As a formidable duo, they're also strangely alike; both are allergic to the same foods, share the same birthday, show a great appreciation of checked shirts, and laugh similarly. One might even say they're exchangeable...

However one day at an infamous conference, things take an odd turn as both Nam and Jackton unknowingly both wear the same outfit which corrupts the cosmic ordering of the universe and causes them to switch bodies!

Hilarity ensues as Nam and Jackton try and pass off as each other at the conference without raising any suspicion. Watch as Jackton feels the wrath his own success that Nam endures, and attempts to keep up with Nam's womanising ways, whilst Nam tries to pass off that he knows what he's doing and gets flung into the Jackton's husband-fatherhood shoes.

Find out to see if equilibrium will be restored!

All to the soundtrack of Van Halen's "Jump" of course!

Bob IS Your Uncle: Wedding Day

New black comedy featuring a set of unrelated stories and people, but with one common link: Uncle Bob (to be played by the same actor in all episodes).

This first episode sees Tom and Jane prepare for their upcoming wedding. Among the the list of attendees is Jane's Uncle Bob, an awkward fellow whose presence at the forthcoming wedding will no doubt cause some controversy.

Hilarity ensues as Tom and Jane's wedding falls to pieces with Uncle Bob turning up completely drunk, sexually harassing the bridesmaids, falsely announcing that Jane is already married, making an inappropriate unexpected speech at the reception, and destroying the wedding cake by means of a drunken random walk.

"Ah well, what can you do when Bob IS your uncle". (Freeze frame on this exact exiting line.)

Oh Athena! You're breaking my heart.

A 70s (not 1970s, but 1770s) inspired comedy featuring a single bachelor, Malcolm.

In this introductory pilot episode, we see a depressed lonely Malcolm working alone in his designated carrel at  SLEX insurance. Malcolm is not happy with his job or his life, questioning the purpose of everything he does and is constantly having severe migraines. (This entire introductory sequence is shot entirely in grayscale to emphasise the mundaneness of Malcolm's life.)

One day, Malcolm decides to get his migraines checked at his GP. His GP informs him that he has rare medical condition called Zeuslaria, and cures him by cutting his headache, only to be release and be greeted by a small, mischief but street smart girl by the name of Athena. (Upon the releasing of Athena, the screen is filled with colour.)

We join Malcolm and Athena on their misadventures as Malcolm tries to teach Athena how things run in the real world. And along these misadventures, Malcolm will finally discover his purpose in life.

Oh Athena! You're breaking my heart. is shot in front of a live studio audience with (un)necessary canned laughter.

Academia Nuts

Mockumentary comedy film in the style of Arrested Development.

This film revolves around PhD student, Robert, and his misadventures as he tries to keep his department afloat, with many of the members of staff and fellow students being quite...irrational in their thinking.
Despite Robert desperate wanting to leave the madhouse, he can't but feel a little attached to the unfortunate inmates.

Scenes to be included (many to be commentated in my best Ron Howard-esque voice):

"Professor Jones had recently been awarded the Best Posterior award at what he thought was the American Statistical Society conference. It was in fact just the plain ASS conference, and despite his many years practising Bayesian ethics,  he had never seen quite so many bare posteriors."

"Dr Singh was walking down Bond Street in London when a sleezy man approached him and stated that  he was a big fan of his work and that one day, he'd aspire to make his own Markov Chain explode. Dr. Singh was both touched and confused by this remark, yet he was willingly led down the alleyway."
